SUBJECT:

Instructions for Processing Benefits Deductions for Postdoctoral Scholars

DATE:

April 4, 2008

On April 1, 2008, Duke launched a new Postdoctoral Policy. The policy is effective for Postdoctoral Associates and Postdoctoral Scholars. If you are unfamiliar with the policy, please visit the Office of Postdoctoral Services web site at http://postdoc.duke.edu/ for details about all aspects of the new policy.

As part of this new policy, Postdoctoral Scholars will receive a stipend for a portion of their medical insurance through the noncompensatory payment system. To be eligible for medical insurance, Postdoctoral Scholars will need to be on the compensatory payroll for 30 days before being transferred to the noncompensatory payroll. When the employee transfers, departments will need to set-up a payment for the individual's stipend amount and a payment to cover the individual's medical insurance stipend.

Corporate Payroll Services has partnered with the Office of Postdoctoral Services, Corporate Human Resources, The Provost's Office, the School of Medicine Human Resources, Business Managers and Human Resource Managers to develop a procedure for processing these benefit deductions. Visit www.payroll.duke.edu and go to the What's New Policies and Procedures for the step-by-step instructions for processing these payments.

If you have specific questions about the new Policy, please contact the Office of Postdoctoral Services at 681-7192. If you have questions about the instructions for processing payments, please contact Corporate Payroll Services at 684-2642.

Thank you for your support as Duke implements this new policy.
