Postdoc Scholar Insurance Stipends & Reports |
DATE: |
April 29, 2008 |
Thank you for your support and patience during the implementation of Duke University's new Postdoc Policy and the corresponding changes for processing insurance stipends for Postdoc Scholars on the Noncompensatory Payment System.
In preparation for the first noncompensatory pay day under the new policy, we have included reminders and updates below to assist with any questions you may receive from your Post Doc scholars.
- The Postdoc Policy guarantees the Duke contribution and the individual contribution for insurance premiums regardless of the level of coverage selected. If a Postdoc Scholar has selected to include eligible family members in his/her insurance coverage, the amount of the insurance stipend may or may not be equal to the full amount of the insurance deduction.
- As a reminder, the insurance stipend is considered taxable income and has been included in the taxable gross. Since Postdoc Scholars are not Duke employees, all insurance deductions are taken post tax.
- Postdoc Scholars who previously received credit for dental and/or vision insurance via departmental journal entries will now see these insurance premiums deducted as a post tax deduction.
- Due to an error in the communications distributed by Corporate Payroll, the wage type used to process the health care insurance stipend is 4012 not 4052. Our Payroll team made the necessary changes on the forms you submitted for April. In addition, we will correct the instructions for processing payments on our website. Please use 4012 for all future transactions. The service type/service categories do not change.
- The insurance stipend will not be included in April's monthly reports distributed with the Noncompensatory checks/vouchers. Please contact the Office of Postdoctoral Services for your department's specific reports that reflect charges to the 4012 wage type. Beginning in May, Noncompensatory Payment reports will include the 4012 wage type.
- All insurance stipends are posted to unique service type/service categories. You will see these reflected on your April financial statements under the 6352 or 6362 service type/categories as assigned by your department.
If you have questions about application of the Postdoc Policy, please contact the Office of Postdoctoral Services at 681-7154.
